This Is Who I Am
I am an "Opregte Capey" (real Capetonian) having been born on the Cape Flats on the outskirts of Cape Town in 1953. I consider myself to be “a teen-age hooligan trapped in a geriatric body”.
I met Linda one night when I was doing a Cossack dance on a small table in a pub (as you do). We married in 1978, and remained together for 33 wonderful years, during which time we produced three children—Kathleen, Patrick, and Brigid. Our fun-filled and adventurous relationship was abruptly brought to an end in October 2011, when Linda died of brain cancer. This event ultimately brought about my return to the world of motorcycling. If you are interested in the details, visit the section of my other blog called Diary of a Disaster in my other (more philosophical) blog—Makwerhu’s Musings.
So far, in the middle of 2023, my children have provided me with two children-in-law, two grandchildren, and a third one due any day now. Kathleen married Gerrit in 2005, and they have produced the first two grandchildren; Shannon (2014) and Daniel (2016). Patrick married Lèzelle in 2017. Brigid is working in Vietnam, and is currently single. Brigid and I have done three motorbike trips together.
I am passionate about music (baroque, romantic, classical, sacred, operatic, and ballet). I love theatre, opera, and ballet, and enjoy reading, creative writing, and studying theology and church history. I was an enthusiastic road-runner for much of my life. but my knees finally yielded to the onslaught of χρονοϛ, so I am now a has-been. I also have ten Cape Town Cycle Tours (Argus Tours) to my credit.
My past activities include playing the bagpipes, clarinet, and recorders, doing gymnastics, hockey, rock climbing, and membership of a mountain rescue team.
I am retired, and I’m loving every minute of it.
I enjoy off-road motorcycling, as well as long motorcycle trips around Southern Africa on my BMW F650GS (named after my wife). As at he beginning of April 2020, I have done more than 83000km of “riding round in circles”.
